Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas in the historic ghost town of Thurber and the other at CTFAC in Stephenville. Come see 5 generations of Orr quilts at the W.K. If Quilts Could Talk: Orr Family Quilts Across Five Generations

Showcases 30 traditional Southern quilts created, handed down, and cared for by five generations of Orr family quilters beginning circa 1870 in Silver Run, Alabama. In 1898 the family brought 19th century quilts to Brandon, Hill County, Texas where they created quilts for several more decades. This exhibit displays iconic patterns including, Flower Basket, Crown of Thorns, Stamp Quilt, Dove at the Window, Grandmother’s Fan, Magic Vine, and a variety of other classics.

Visitors will also see notions from the family’s sewing cabinet and observe the nature of hand piecing and hand quilting, evident in fabric scraps that appear in multiple quilts. Handwritten postcards, excerpts from family journals, and photographs of the quilters capture the essence of the family’s rural farm life. A video shows restoration and conservation completed by the fifth-generation caregiver of the quilts, Sue Goodman.

Cloth as Community: Hmong Textiles in America

Showcases 28 flower cloths and embroidered story clothes created by Hmong women in the U.S. that connect their experiences in America with the Native culture. The exhibit highlights needlework skills and cultural knowledge that had been passed down in cloth for generations.

Hmong flower cloth (or paj ntaub) is one of the world’s great textile traditions and an excellent example of cloth as community. Despite its deep roots in Hmong culture, this complex art was not widely known outside Asia until after the Vietnam War, when Hmong refugees arrive in the United States. The works illustrate the profound relevance of textiles as infrastructure in the Hmong culture, an art form that shifted as it adapted to fit new realities.
